Chapter 38

The jog to the last room took us far longer than we expected. And after sidestepping several trapped rooms, and avoiding falling bricks, we finally approach our goal.

Panting and out of breath, we all slow to a stop at the sight of the final room. “By the gods, that sucked,” Addison pants.

Nix nods by her side. “Did you see that pit that opened up behind us. We barely made it out of that room in time!”

“I was fine,” I voice.

“Shut up, Fen!” Nix snaps. “You were in the lead! You don’t know what we went through!”

“Actually—”

“Don’t!” Nix growls. “On the way back, you can see the damage that was caused by your rush!”

Holding up my hands, I back away from my angry kitten. “I’m just going to go find the core now…”

Growling, she lets me walk away. Turning back to Addison, Nix helps the girl sit down and relax her breathing. Thomas and Terry fall to the ground, and my wolves pant and slump down to their stomachs. I don’t know why they are acting tired.

Stretching out my senses, I tap into my Earth magic and coat the room. Soon I find the core hiding behind a thin layer of wall on the back side of the room. Crushing the brick is easy enough, and dust billows into the room as the wall falls away.

Resting on a pedestal is a large black crystal that seems to shiver as I draw near. Balling my hands into fists, I reach out and snatch up the gem. Turning to Nix, I nod.

“Are you ready?” I ask.

Getting back to her feet, she returns my nod. “Toss it up.”

Complying, I toss her the core, and watch as she swings her sword with added energy. The blade connects and I watch the core slowly crumble and crack as the sword breaks its surface.

The sound of glass shattering fills the air, and shards fly across the room as Nix completes her swing. Just as suddenly as the core shatters, the light of the dungeon starts fading away.

Calling on my Light magic, I restore our vision. Leaving one orb to float around my party, I summon a second to help me find the broken shards. I’m not going to leave them here for the other dungeons to find.

Nix walks to my side to help me pick up the shards, and her hand grabs mine as we reach for the same piece.

“You know I’m not actually mad at you, right?” she asks.

Smiling, I shrug. “I won’t blame you if you are. You are allowed to feel things other than love towards me.”

Sighing, she nods. “I really do appreciate everything you do for me. For us, Fen. Sometimes, I need to vent, and you are the only one that lets me. Although you did tell me that I’d never be your master that one time.”

Chuckling, I snatch the shard away. “Well, it’s true. I’ll always be here to put you back in your place,” I say with a wink.

Crossing her arms, she glares at me.
